William Stodart, London ca. 1820 - 1825


Compensation Frame
This very rare and unusual grand fortepiano was made by William Stodart in London around 1820 - 1825 and is a fine example of the by William Allen and James Thom in 1820 patented "compensation frame". The case is made in mahogany and rosewood, original ormolu decorations around the case and original keyboard. The ormolu decorated nameboard is signed with:

"Patent
William Stodart.
Maker
to His Majesty & the Royal Family
Golden Square
London".


The instrument is straight strung, original hammers (some are broken) and tuning pins, two pedals and one handstop for dampers, due corde and una corda. The music stand is broken, some parts are missing. The instruments rests in the ununsual stand. There is also one similar instrument known. Is located in Buckingham Palace and belongs to Her Royal Majesty, the Queen. This instrument is in unrestored condition.
